How Small Businesses Can Use Social Media

Here's a fantastic article about how small businesses can use social media in their marketing: 10 Small Business Social Media Marketing Tips. What I think makes this article stand out is that the author gives both a basic strategy and an advanced strategy for each social media tool. Most articles I've read give only more advanced strategies. However, the basic strategies are especially helpful for those who are just getting their feet wet. With these basic strategies, you know you're starting out on the right foot.

I also really like the points under basic strategies about setting up an account for any (or all) of these services with your business name. This is valuable for several reasons:

  • Even if you don't use the service right away, the account with your name is available to you when you are ready to use it.
  • Your competitors can't "steal" the username with your business name. If someone else has taken your business name as a username, it's very hard to get it back -- read, law suit. They probably won't be using the account with your business name -- they are just keeping you from using it.
  • Think of accounts with your business name as the username as intellectual property connected to your brand. If you sell or transfer your business, these usernames can go with the business, just like the name of the business would.

By the way, this also applies to buying domain names. You can buy any number of domain names related to your business name and have them all point to your website -- and keep them out of the hands of your competitors.
