Best Practices for Email Marketing

I gathered these tips for a presentation, "Email Marketing with Constant Contact", that I gave for the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce on September 29, 2010.

  • Get permission to send emails
  • Use your name/company name in the From box. If people don’t recognize who the email is from, they won’t open it.
  • Make sure the Subject reflects what’s in the email, or people may feel tricked.
  • Give an easy Unsubscribe tool (and unsubscribe them before you next send an email)
  • Include a valid mailing address and phone number so recipients can actually contact you.
  • Only email relevant info
  • Include a reminder of why they’re on the list.
  • Build and maintain the email relationship; send emails on a regular basis.
  • Ask recipients to add you to their address book, so you don’t end up in their Junk folder, and your images are more likely to appear.
  • Use both images and text in your emails.
  • Test your email in different email clients to see how they appear before you send it out.
