Web design is not print design, or graphic design...

I came across this article today -- it's old (2007), but still thought provoking. Understanding Web Design.

The writer talks about how graphic & print designers often view website design as being so limited, with limited fonts, very specific grids, headers, footers, sidebars, etc, etc. However, he says we should look at web design from a different perspective. Web design is more like architecture or typography. His definition of web design is this:

Web design is the creation of digital environments that facilitate and encourage human activity; reflect or adapt to individual voices and content; and change gracefully over time while always retaining their identity.

I like this definition because it challenges me to think outside the box when I sit down to a build a design. It emphasizes how web design is really more of an interface, or an environment, rather than just a visual thing.

Although we do engage in graphic design our primary focus is the web. We have had our share of problems when working with 'pure' graphic designers- for one they find it near impossible to grasp the web is all about minimal file sizes. And of course they tend to use macs whereas many more web designers are on PC- this brings upfile compatibility issues

I would like to thanks for the efforts you have put in writing this blog. I am hoping the same high-grade blog post from you in the upcoming as well.I agree that a web designer must have a creative approach and must have a understanding of user. The design of webpage and content must inter related so the user can interact with it. You have posted really a good information in this blog. Thanks.

I agree. It is such an inspiring definition. I just remembered one of my favorite quotes, "The designer does not, as a rule, begin with a preconceived idea. His idea is the result of subjective and objective thought, and the design a product of the idea."

Nice one! I am a web designer and I really don't see it as limited. I think its all about your ideas and how you put it through your designs and making the most of what you have on hand. And with the advancement of the technology there is no limit of every creation made with web designing. SEOArbiter.com

Hi!
This blog is definitely rather handy since I’m at the moment creating an internet floral website – although I am only starting out therefore it’s really fairly small, nothing like this site. Can link to a few of the posts here as they are quite.I definitely enjoying every little bit of it I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post…

Depending on the experience and the white paper effect of the graphic designer, websites offer a great deal more of artistic opportunities for the designer. Although print is an expert form, website design is still more expressive.

This is really an informative blog about the web design which was really important to know for us because i am try to learn web design and i hope to read this blog it will help me a lot in near future. Thanks
