We write many emails every day without thinking much about the subject line. Then we sit down to draft a marketing email, we suddenly wonder, what should I put in that line -- the first line our readers see -- so that they'll open the email?

I gathered these tips for a presentation, "Email Marketing with Constant Contact", that I gave for the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce on September 29, 2010.
- Add a sign-up box to your website
- Add a link to sign up on your email signature
- Use a sign-up list - at tradeshows, etc.
- Have a contest/giveaway
- On website info form, add checkbox for permission to email newsletter
- Mail a postcard with offer for email address

Read this article today, with some good tips on email marketing. The key points:
- Use your brand in the subject line
- Lifestyle photos work for consumer markets, but not business markets
- Layout along "newsletter" style works better than "postcard" style
- Have less than 6 links in your email
